Delicious Ice Cream in a Bag

Have you ever made homemade ice cream? Today in our after school activity we made a delicious ice cream in a bag. My students really enjoyed making it and of course, who doesn’t love homemade ice cream?

How to Make Delicious Ice Cream in a Bag

First here’s what we need;

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream (heavy/double cream)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 quart zipper-top bag
  • 1 gallon zipper-top bag
  • 3 cups ice cubes
  • 3/4 cup salt, rock or kosher salt

Here’s how to make it, first combine in a small bag,  one fourth cup sugar, one half cup of milk and half whipping or heavy cream and one quarter teaspoon of vanilla. If you want to make chocolate ice cream, add in some chocolate syrup too. Seal up each bag securely after adding the ingredients, mix the ingredients by squeezing gently the bag around in your hands until it is combined.

Next fill your gallon size  zipper-top bag with 3 cups of ice cubes then add three quarter cup of salt. Now put the small size bag filled with ingredients into the bag of ice and salt. Seal the gallon zipper-top bag securely. If the bag begins to leak, you can double the bag to reduce the mess.

Let’s start the fun of making delicious ice cream in a bag, gently rock the gallon zipper-top bag from side to side. It’s best to hold it by the top seal or to have mittens, gloves, towel or a cloth between the bag and your hands as your hands will get cold.

Continue to shake the bag for 5-10 minutes until the ice cream mixture begins to harden. Feel the smaller bag every couple of minutes while you shake it and take a peek at it. Once the ice cream has set, open the gallon bag and remove the quart bag from the bag of ice. Open the quart zipper-top bag, squeeze it out of the bag into a bowl and garnish it. Add any desired toppings, fruits and nuts that you want.

We added blueberries, blackberries and strawberry. My students did really have fun making delicious ice cream in bag.
